Enjoy a Day at Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park Near Cambridge

Not far from our Cambridge apartments is a unique outdoor destination "rich in opportunities for outdoor recreation, relaxation, and learning." We are talking about Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, and it features 34 islands and peninsulas waiting to be explored. Here are a few of the islands you can discover:
Little Brewster Island
Full of history, Little Brewster Island features the "oldest continually used and last staffed lighthouse" in the United States. A National Historic Landmark, Boston Light dates back to the Revolutionary War. It can cast a light beam more than 25 miles into the Atlantic and is an impressive sight overlooking the sea. The best way to learn about Boston Light is to enjoy the Harbor Lighthouse Cruise narrated by the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service.
Peddocks Island
At one time, Native Americans, prisoners of war, and farmers lived on Peddocks Island. Today, it's where visitors come to hike and watch for nature's feathery creatures. As you explore, you'll also see sites like Fort Andrews and a restored World War II-era chapel.
Grape Island
Called a "wildlife paradise," Grape Island draws outdoor enthusiasts who come to enjoy nature. The land is full of wild berries and was the site of a Revolutionary War skirmish known as the "Grape Island Alarm." It now welcomes visitors who come to hike, swim, and birdwatch. A tent campsite is also available for a night under the stars.
Thompson Island
Once a trading post between Native Americans and David Thompson, Thompson Island later served as a farm and trade school for orphans. Today, it's perfect for enjoying nature or hosting special events like weddings and family reunions. Fishing is also available from the sandbar at Quincy Squaw Rock Park. Visiting the island is by private boat or public ferry. The ferry only runs on Saturdays and Sundays during the spring and summer months.
After a fun-filled day outdoors, enjoy some lobster rolls at a nearby restaurant. If you're looking to call Flats on First home, please contact our leasing team. We'll gladly show you everything our apartments in Cambridge have to offer.
